Ive had a busy weekend so the rant is coming to you little later than normal. I did a little crewing for Leeds University freshers week. Apart from the truly awful ‘Stardust’ from Pineapple Dance Studios & ‘H’ from steps fame, ‘Five’ also played. Ironically there is only two of them now! It amused me anyway.
The thing I want to talk about this week is drummers and their cymbals. Why do some of them insist on buying big Z customs and taking them to small venues where they swallow up the entire sound of the band?! To mix the rest of the band around the volume of the drums would lead to ear-piercingly loud volume levels that would be undesirable to the listener. Ive talked about this in a post on improving drum sounds in small venues so I wont rant about it too much. What got me thinking about this subject was that I told a drummer this weekend that his cymbal sound was too loud and if he could tone down the smashing of the ride cymbal it would drastically improve the sound of the band. He looked at me with a vacant look in his eye and kinda shrugged his shoulders. Having said all this the bands fans were saying its the best sound they have had! Maybe I just have higher standards?!
